What does the Policy Assignment Utility do?
The Policy Assignment Utility is where you: define to whom or what (Assignees) you will apply your policies; and then apply Policies to those Assignees. Assignees can be a User, Group, Domain, Computer, IP Address, IP Address Range, Computer OU, or User OU. Once you have defined an Assignee, you can apply a Policy to it, or change an existing Policy Assignment.

1. Define a new Assignee by clicking on the green 'Add Assignee' link in the “Users” dialog box.
2. Select an Assignee type from the “Select Type” pulldown in the “Add Users” dialog.
3. Specify an Assignee by manually typing it in the field provided, or by using the browse Active Directory option and picking from a list.
4. Add the Assignee by clicking the “Add Assignee” link in the “Add Users” utility. TTC then displays an “Apply Policy” dialog.
5. Select a Content Filter/Tiered Administration/Security Agent Policy to apply to your Assignee.
6. Review the Conflict Resolution Priority. TTC selects a Conflict Resolution Priority for you based on the Assignee type. Do not change setting this unless you have good reason.
7. Complete the Assignment process by clicking the “Save” link.

The following explains the major links and components of the Policy Assignment Utility:

• Users Dialog - The Users Dialog is where you Add, View and Remove Assignees.
• Add Assignee - Click on this link to Add Assignees: Users, Groups, Domains, Computers, IP Addresses, IP Address Ranges, Computer OUs, or User OUs.
• Remove Selected - Click on this link to delete Assignees. You must select an Assignee by clicking the box next to it before you can remove it. Use caution with this option as deleting an Assignee with applied Policies can cause unexpected behavior.
• Active Directory - Expand the Active Directory link to display Active Directory domains available for assignment. You can further expand Domains to view domain-based Assignees such as Users, Groups, and Computers. Click on an individual Assignee to view or modify its currently applied policies.
• IP Ranges - Expand the IP Ranges link to view IP Ranges available for assignment. Total Traffic Control installs a generic assignment IP Range of 0.0.0.0-255.255.255.255 pre-defined, and applies the CIPA-compliant “Basic Users” to that range. Click on an IP Range to view or modify its currently applied policies.
• IPs - Expand the IPs link to view IPs you’ve defined for assignment. Click on an individual IP to view or modify its currently applied policies.
• Organizational Units - Expand the Organizational Unit link to view OUs you’ve defined for assignment. Click on an individual OU to view or modify its currently applied policies.
• Other Users - Expand the Other Users link to view other Assignees you’ve defined for assignment. Click on an Assignee to view or modify its currently applied policies.
• Add Users Dialog - The Add Users Dialog is where you add Assignees. You can add domain assets as Assignees by manually typing the asset name or by browsing a list of assets.
• Select Type - Use this pulldown to select the type of Assignee you’d like to add: Domain/Computer/User/Group, IP Address, IP Address Range, Computer OU, or User OU.
• Domain/Computer/User/Group - Select this type to define Active Directory-based Assignees.
• Network Directory - Manual Add - Type the name the domain and asset (e.g., lightspeed\john) you want to add as an Assignee.
• Asset Type - Once you’ve named the asset, select the Asset Type (Users/Groups/Domain/Computers). You can then click the Add Assignee link to add the asset as an Assignee.
• Add Assignee - Click the Add Assignee link within the 'Add Users Dialog' to add your manually-typed Assignee.
• Network Directory - Browse Active Directory - Click on the “browse Active Directory” link to select an Assignee from a list.
• Select Domain/Workgroup - To pick an asset from a domain, select the Domain or Workgroup from this pulldown.
• Top Level Domain/Workgroup Only - Select this option if you want to add the just the Domain/Workgroup as the Assignee.
• Computers/Users/Groups - Click on the one of these links to limit the list to the specified asset type. Scroll to find the asset you want to add as an Assignee, then select it.
• Add Assignee - Click the Add Assignee link in the 'Add Users Dialog' to add the specified asset as an Assignee.
• IP Address - Select this type if you want to add a single IP Address as an Assignee.
• IP Address Manual Add - Type the IP address you want to add as an Assignee.
• Add Assignee - Click the Add Assignee link in the 'Add Users Dialog' to add the IP as an Assignee.
• IP Address Range - Select this type if you want to add an IP Address Range as an Assignee.
• IP Range Start - Type the beginning IP address of the range.
• IP Range End - Type the ending IP address of the range.
• Add Assignee - Click the Add Assignee link in the 'Add Users Dialog' to add the specified Asset as an Assignee.
• Computer OU - Select this type if you want to add a Computer OU as an Assignee.
• Enter an OU - Type the name of the Computer Organizational Unit.
• Add Assignee - Click the Add Assignee link in the 'Add Users Dialog' to add the specified Asset as an Assignee.
• User OU - Select this type if you want to add a User OU as an Assignee.
• Enter an OU - Type the name of the User Organizational Unit.
• Add Assignee - Click the Add Assignee link in the 'Add Users Dialog' to add the specified Asset as an Assignee.
• Editing/Apply Policy Dialog - If you’ve just added an Assignee, or are viewing a previously created one, TTC displays this dialog. You use this utility to Apply Policies to your new Assignees, or to modify existing Policy Assignments.
• Content Filter - You can select the Content Filter Policy you’d like to apply to your Assignee from this pulldown.
• Tiered Administration - You can select the Tiered Administration Policy you’d like to apply to your Assignee from this pulldown.
• Security Agent - You can select the Security Agent Policy you’d like to apply to your Assignee from this pulldown.
• Edit - You can edit the currently assigned Policy by selecting the Edit link.
• Add - You can create a new Policy by clicking on the Add link. Once you’ve created the new policy, you can apply it to the Assignee.
• Conflict Resolution Priority - In the case that an Assignee falls within two or more Assignments, TTC uses the Conflict Resolution Priority to determine which Policy to apply. A higher-numbered Priority takes precedence over a lower. TTC automatically assigns this number based on the Assignee type, but you can change the Priority by moving the green slider to your preferred setting.
• Save - Once you are satisfied with your Policy selections, click the Save link to apply them. The policy will become active within a minute.
